Part one: Please, Just Believe Me plot summary

Please, Just Believe Me is a 31-episode fantasy drama set in the underwater world. The main characters Elise and Mia are princesses in the kingdom of Atlantis. Elise should have been an elite princess yet “liar” is the only label she has ever been given. So what happens in the story?

The girl next to Elise is her twin sister, Mia. They look exactly alike but their fates are completely different. Years ago, in Royal Temple, the king gave the Truth Circlet, forged in abyssal fire, to their mom. And he told her that only those who pass its test may rule the seas. The Circlet chose her mother and every queen. Now it was Elise’s and Mia’s turn to wear it. Green means truth, blessed by the sea. Red means a lie and Mom will correct you, no matter what it takes.  

In Blair’s Treasure Room, Mia broke their mom’s favorite night pearl on purpose and said that she saw Elise deliberately smash it. The same things often happen. Knowing her circlet only shines green light, Mia didn’t worry about her mother’s punishment because it never happens to her. What’s more, she was not satisfied with being praised for her “honesty”. She started to do something bad and blamed these incidents on Elise. When the mom saw the red light on Elise’s head, she would ask Elise to reflect on her actions in the Dark Abyss until her Truth Circlets turned green again.

Episode two

After Elise went to thee Dark Abyss, her sister’s slander to her continued. One day, their mom found her crown wasn’t in the treasure box. She asked Mia where her crown was going and Mia answered that she didn’t see it. In face, it was Mia who took the crown away. But the green light helped her say that she didn’t lie. So the mom came to find Elise but Elise wasn’t in her room. 

Elise explained that she didn’t take it because the palace gated were sealed last night. But the mom said she specifically told them to leave the door open for her last night. So who did this? It’s her sister Mia. Mia deactivated the silencing magic circle this morning while everyone was still asleep. 

Suddenly, Mia reminded the mom to find the crown. Again Elise said she didn’t but the mom found the crown in her room. Elise didn’t know what had happened. The mom used the magic to punish Elise. Elise felt such a headache and pleaded her father to persuade to stop. Her father said something but her mom stick to her view. Then, the father received an emergency call from the deep-sea patrol and left. Elise started to doubt whether she was just a born liar. 

Episode three

The mother questioned why Elise couldn’t be as honest as Mia. Elise wanted to pacify her mother’s emotions, but her mother’s punishment was harsher. She ordered Elise to clean the entire palace and Elise was not allowed to eat anything until she was done. However, Elise felt she was really sick. Her mom thought she was just trying to fake an illness to get out of punishment. 

Her final plea for help became, in her mom’s eyes, the most pathetic lie. Her mom just said indifferently, “You’re beyond help. Stay here and think about what you’ve done.” Elise stayed at her room alone and hoped that in her next life, she would be an honest Kaidan. 

What’s worse, she began to believe in the circlet and brainwashed herself as a liar. She thought to herself that the circlet doesn’t lie and she was lying because she was lying. She told herself “It doesn’t hurt. I have to write a self-critique. That’s the rule. Whenever the red light comes up, I have to carve ‘I’m a liar’ thousand times on the shell.” 

Part three: Please, Just Believe Me ending analysis

To our sadness, Elise died due to his mom’s punishment while her spirit lingered. When the people found that the circlets were just cheap toys produced by humans, Elise’s mom collapsed and leaped to her death. After her mom’s death, the mother and the daughter met each other. Elise slept in her hugs and hoped that the time of being together with her mom could be longer.

After Elise slept, her mom visited Lord Poseidon. She told him that she was willing to offer him everything she had including her life, her soul and the chance to be reborn just so that he may grant Elise a true rebirth, a life forever surrounded by love and grow up in peace. The lord alerted her the price of sacrifice: she would die instantly, her soul would vanish completely into the depths of the sea and never see Elise again. Moreover, he asked if she was sure she wanted to trade her life for Elise’s. 

The mom said yes and she hoped that she could atone for her crime because it was she who hurt Elise with her own hands at such a young age. It was the only right that she paid for this with her own life. All the mom asked was that Elise grew up safe and happy. The lord granted her request. 

When Elise woke up, she found her mom didn’t stay by her side. She found the lord and the lord told her what her mom did. Elise said that she won’t be reborn and all she wanted was her mom could accompany her. Through the lord’s persuasion, Elise agreed that she would live happy. 

The scene was so warm, right? Actually, it was a dream created by Elise. She didn’t want her mom live in regret so she created that. Are you touched here? 

Part four: Conclusion

Please, Just Believe Me presents such a tragedy but ends with a warm scene where the mom gave her life to bring about the final redemption in the dream. Elise said “When you make a mistake, there’s no way to make it right sometimes.” It was true. Something regretful always happens in the daily life but we didn’t have an opportunity to make up for it. Luckily, Please, Just Believe Me’s ending satisfy our illusion and filled the void in our midst.
